A former diplomat, Dr
Jaspal Singh occupied the coveted position of Vice-Chancellor
of Punjabi University, Patiala, on December 12, 2007.
During his stint as India's
High Commissioner to Mozambique and Swaziland, Dr Jaspal Singh
played the stellar role of identifying newer areas of cooperation
for enhancing the scope and vistas of understanding among the
countries concerned. This included signing of agreement for the
establishment of Indo-Mozambique Joint Cooperation Commission,
Indo-Mozambique Draft Agreement for Cooperation and Indo-Swaziland
Trade Agreement. All this in no uncertain terms proved the fact
that his selection as India's Ambassador was not just a matter
of chance but an unquestionably prudent choice by all means.
After securing his Master's
degree in Political Science from Aligarh Muslim University, he
did his Doctorate from Panjab University, Chandigarh on "The
Concept of State as Reflected in Sikh Scriptures and Historical
Writings" in 1989.
His total 23 years of
teaching experience includes 10 years as Head, Department of Political
Science at Khalsa College, Dev Nagar, University of Delhi even
as he remained Principal of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce,
University of Delhi for more than seven years.
Dr Jaspal Singh has authored
well-acclaimed books including, Raj da Sikh Sankalp, Sikh Dharam
te Rajniti, and Sri Guru Granth Sahib: Sadivi Prerna Sarot, besides
over 200 articles on Sikh history, religion and on issues of national
and international politics thus establishing him as a erudite
scholar and exponent of Sikh theology and its practice.
A medley of his presidential
and keynote addresses at various national and international seminars
and conferences have earned him the distinction of a versatile
genius. Few of them include: Craw of Sikh Identity at Michigan
University, USA, Global View of Guru Nanak at Wisconsin University,
USA, Nature of Monarchy under Maharaja Ranjit Singh during Bi-centenary
Celebrations in UK, International Peace through Religious Cooperation:
Sikh Perspective in the International Conference on Religious
Cooperation at Taipei, Taiwan, The Religious Ethic ana Rights
at Kathmandu, The Concept of Compassion and its Importance in
the 21st Century, organised by Kagyu Yeshe Gatsal Buddhist Trust
and Shri Aurobindo Society, Political Concerns in Guru Granth
Sahib, and Philosophy of Dasam Granth.
Dr Jaspal Singh has been
bestowed with a lot many fellowships, awards and honours by various
national and international institutions including Best Prose Award
by Punjabi Academy, Delhi, Vismad Naad Fellowship by International
Gurmat Institute, Nishan-e-Khalsa presented at Anandpur Sahib
during Tercentenary Celebrations, 1999, Punjabi Parchar Parsar
Award by Punjabi Academy for his outstanding contribution to the
promotion of Punjabi Language and Culture.
Dr Singh has also remained
General-Secretary of Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee,
Founder Member of Punjabi Academy, Delhi, Member, Board for Centre
for Dalits and Minorities Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi
and Chairman, Harkrishan Public School, New Delhi. |
